How Long Does Brow Tint Last, and What Makes It Fade?

Brow tint lasts about 2-4 weeks on the hairs. The tint on the skin underneath fades much sooner, within a few days to a week. How fast your brows get there depends on your skin, your skincare and how much sun and water they see.

Most people are ready for a retint around week 4. Oily skin, retinoids, exfoliating acids, strong cleansers, sun and swimming all shorten that. The first 24 hours matter most, because fresh tint is easiest to wash away. New brow hairs also grow in without color, which is why the gaps come back even when the tinted hairs still look dark.

Tint fades from the skin first

A brow tint colors two things: the hairs and a thin layer of skin under them. The skin part is what makes brows look full and defined on day one. It’s also the first to go, because your skin keeps shedding its outer layer.

The hairs hold color longer. The dye coats each hair, and a hair doesn’t shed its surface the way skin does. Week 2 usually looks softer than day one, and that’s the skin stain fading while the hairs stay dark.

What makes brow tint fade faster?

Anything that breaks down or scrubs off the color on the hair or the skin shortens the result. The usual culprits:

  • Oily skin. Natural oil around the brows breaks the tint down faster.
  • Retinoids and exfoliating acids. Retinol, AHAs and similar products speed up how fast skin sheds, and they take the color with them.
  • Strong cleansers. A foaming face wash scrubbed over the brows every night wears the tint down.
  • Sun. UV light bleaches the color gradually, on brows as on any other hair.
  • Swimming. Chlorine and salt water both pull color out.

You don’t need to give up your skincare. Keep retinoid and acid products off the brow line, and wash around the brows rather than rubbing across them.

The first 24 hours

Fresh tint is at its weakest the first day. For those 24 hours, skip scrubbing, exfoliating, retinoids and strong acids around the brows. Leave out self-tanner and heavy oils on the area too, and save the sauna and long hot showers for later.

After that first day you can go back to your routine, with the habits above in mind.

New hairs grow in without color

Brow hairs shed and grow back on a short cycle, much shorter than the hair on your head. Each new hair comes in at its natural color. A few weeks after a tint, those new hairs start to show between the tinted ones, and the brow looks patchier even if the older hairs haven’t faded much.

No aftercare stops this part. Regrowth is the reason tint needs regular repeats, even for people who never swim and skip the retinol.

When should you book a retint?

Around week 4 for most people. Book sooner, at 3 weeks, if you have oily skin, swim often or use retinoids, since all three shorten the result.

Look at your brows in daylight rather than counting days. When the gaps between hairs show again or the tail looks lighter than the front, it’s time.

Miami sun, pools and humidity

Miami life speeds up most of what fades tint. Strong sun bleaches it a little every day. A dip in the pool or the ocean pulls more out, and in Miami both are part of an ordinary week rather than a summer treat. A wide-brimmed hat keeps the midday sun off your face and brows, and a fresh-water rinse after the pool takes the chlorine off before it sits there all afternoon.

Both our salons tint brows. In Doral the menu has eyebrow tinting and eyebrow shaping. The beach salon adds shaping and tinting as one service and brow lamination. Our brow tinting page has the details for each salon.

Questions we get asked

Why do my brows look too dark right after tinting?

Day one shows the color on the hairs and on the skin together, and the skin stain is the darkest part. Give it 24 to 48 hours before you decide it's too strong. Most of that extra depth comes off with the skin in the first days.

Can I tint my brows at home with hair dye?

Don't use regular hair dye on your brows. Coal-tar hair dyes sold in the US carry a label warning against use on eyebrows or eyelashes, because getting them in the eye can cause serious injury, including blindness.

Can I react to tint after years without problems?

Yes. Sensitivity can develop with repeated exposure, so a reaction is possible even if earlier tints went fine. If you notice redness, itching or swelling around the brows or eyes after an appointment, contact your doctor, and tell your specialist before your next tint.

How long does a brow appointment take?

An eyebrow shaping session takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the service you choose. Tint adds its own time on top of that, and the salon can tell you the total when you book.

Can I get my brows and lashes tinted together?

Yes, at our beach salon. The menu there has a combined brow and lash tint, so both get done in one appointment.
